General Responsibilities & Policies

The City of Lewiston’s Human Resources (HR) Department was established in 1973 and deals with:

  • Benefit Administration - Health, life, and dental insurances; flexible benefits plan (including medical and child care reimbursement); retirement systems (MEPERS); deferred compensation plans; retirement health savings plan
  • Central Personnel Records - Maintain up-to-date personnel records on all employees
  • Employee Development - Work with Safety Coordinator to organize and coordinate departmental training programs, such as VDT, harassment prevention, emergency action plans, fire extinguisher, hazardous communication, personal protective equipment, Lock-Out Tag-Out, first-aid / CPR, traffic control, and other programs
  • Employment - Recruitment and screening; background checks; new employee orientations
  • Health and Safety Programs - Self-insured workers’ compensation program; coordinate safety programs; administer alcohol & drug testing program for CDL drivers; health care management program administration
  • Human Resources Administration -  Compliance with state and federal employment laws; OSHA record keeping, VDT, MHRC, DOL; job descriptions; policy development; consulting with department heads; records retention; information exchange with other agencies, financial institutions, and other similar organizations
