The Treasury Division handles utility payments and registers cars, motorcycles, trailers, trucks, ATVs, snowmobiles, RVs, and boats when proper documentation is provided. The division levies and processes all real estate and personal property taxes. Residential single-family or duplex property owners may purchase a Municipal Solid Waste ePass from this office and at the Solid Waste Facility.
Vehicle Registration Renewals, private sales, as well as first time registrations for vehicles purchased through a Maine dealer, may be completed in the Treasury Office. The following paperwork is required for each of the above mentioned transactions:
Proof of Insurance
Blue Title Application
Buyer’s Order showing Proof of Sales Tax
Proof of Insurance
Window Sticker (brand new vehicles)
Previous Owner’s Title* (vehicles 1995 and newer)
Bill of Sale
Proof of Insurance card for new vehicle
Previous registration when transferring plates
The Treasury Office is no longer providing vehicle registration quotes. This decision was made due to the discrepancies in the amount quoted (due to additional accessories) as well as, the issue with timeliness of returning calls (at the beginning of the month and end of the month), during times of increased number of registrations (beginning of the seasons - recreational vehicles) and during tax payment due dates.
Registration renewals may also be processed online at Rapid Renewal
Real Estate and Personal Property Taxes
The City’s tax year runs from July 1st through June 30th. Tax bills are mailed semi-annually with payments due on September 15th and March 15th. Interest begins to accrue the day after the due date on any unpaid balance for that period.
Liens are placed on any real estate account that has a balance remaining come mid-June. Property owners then have 18 months from the lien recording date to pay the balance in full before foreclosure occurs.
Payments may be made by cash, check or debit/credit cards.* Check and credit card payments can be mailed to the Treasurer’s Office at 27 Pine St., Lewiston ME 04240.
